Male students in traditional Al-Azhar uniforms — white galabeyas and distinctive red-and-white caps (Taqiyah) — sit at classroom desks facing a teacher at the blackboard inside an Al-Azhar religious school in Qena, Upper Egypt. Al-Azhar schools are part of Egypt's oldest and most influential Islamic educational institution, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, which has operated for over a thousand years and combines religious Quran-based instruction with national curriculum subjects. This image reflects the enduring role of Al-Azhar education in Egyptian society, particularly in Upper Egypt governorates such as Qena.
