Male students wearing the distinctive red and white Al-Azhar taqiyah (Taqiyya) caps sit in rows facing a teacher standing at the front of a classroom with a blackboard, inside an Al-Azhar religious school in Qena, Upper Egypt. Al-Azhar schools (Ma'ahad Al-Azhar) form one of Egypt's oldest and most extensive religious education networks, providing Quranic studies, Islamic jurisprudence, and general curriculum subjects across thousands of branches nationwide. The scene captures a traditional Islamic classroom setting typical of religious schooling in rural Upper Egypt.
