An Al-Azhar school teacher, dressed in a traditional grey gallabiya (galabeya) and white turban, leans toward students seated at wooden desks inside a basic classroom in Qena, Upper Egypt. The male students wear the distinctive red and white tarboush caps that identify Al-Azhar students across Egypt. Al-Azhar schools are part of Egypt's oldest Islamic educational institution, offering religious and academic curricula throughout the country, with a strong presence in Upper Egyptian governorates such as Qena.
