About this asset

Wide stone staircase ascending to the ornate wooden-columned entrance facade of Al-Muallaqah Church (Kanisit El-Muallaqah), one of the oldest Coptic Christian churches in Egypt, located in the historic Coptic Cairo neighborhood of Mar Girgis. The church is built atop the southern gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon, giving it the appearance of being suspended — the origin of its name 'The Hanging Church.' The interior features intricate wooden Mashrabeya (مشربية) screens, marble inlays, and medieval Coptic iconography dating back to the 7th century.
