An Egyptian craftsman sits barefoot on the ground surrounded by raw bamboo (khizaran) rods, carefully sorting and shaping them by hand against an aged stone wall in the Darb Al-Ahmar district of Cairo. The area, particularly the street of Taht Al-Rob', is historically known as Egypt's primary center for bamboo and wooden cane craftsmanship, home to workshops such as that of Hajj Sabri Farhat, which specializes in producing walking sticks (akkakeez) and bamboo furniture. This traditional craft, passed down through generations, remains one of the living heritage trades of Islamic Cairo.
