About this asset

The interior of the Ben Ezra Synagogue (Kanees Ben Ezra) in the Mar Girgis (Coptic Cairo) district, one of the oldest Jewish places of worship in Egypt, believed to date to the 9th century. The space features tall marble columns, an elaborately carved and gilded wooden ceiling with geometric patterns, a central bimah (Tebah) enclosed by decorative screens, and Star of David ornaments. The synagogue was built on a site traditionally associated with the location where the infant Moses was found and where the holy family rested during their flight into Egypt, making it a site of cross-religious historical significance. Ben Ezra Synagogue is a landmark of Jewish heritage in Egypt and a testament to the centuries-long presence of Jewish communities in Cairo.
