About this asset

The interior nave of the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga) in the Coptic Cairo district of Mar Girgis, one of the oldest Christian churches in Egypt dating to the 4th–5th century AD. The image shows rows of wooden pews, ancient marble columns, exposed brick barrel vaults, a decorated wooden Mashrabeya (مشربية) iconostasis screen, and spot-lit apse, with two visitors seated in prayer or contemplation. Abu Serga is traditionally believed to be built over the cave where the Holy Family rested during their flight into Egypt, making it one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Coptic Christianity.
