About this asset
The Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa), one of Egypt's oldest and most significant Coptic Christian churches, photographed from its courtyard in the Mar Girgis district of Old Cairo. The church's distinctive twin bell towers topped with crosses are visible above the entrance facade, framed by green foliage in the foreground. Visitors walk through the stone-paved courtyard, which is lined with traditional Meshrabeya (wooden lattice) architectural elements. The church dates to the 3rd–4th century AD and is built atop the southern gatehouse of the Roman Babylon Fortress, giving it its iconic elevated position and name.
