About this asset
A visitor stands and photographs the elaborately inlaid marble pulpit inside the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa), one of the oldest Coptic Orthodox churches in Egypt, located in the Mar Girgis area of Old Cairo. The interior features intricate Cosmatesque marble inlay columns, a red-carpeted sanctuary, ornate wooden iconostasis panels decorated with ivory and ebony geometric patterns, and red velvet thrones bearing Coptic iconography. The Hanging Church, formally known as Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church, dates to the late 3rd to early 4th century and is suspended above the southern gatehouse of the ancient Roman Fortress of Babylon.
