About this asset

The interior courtyard of the Hanging Church (Al-Kanisa Al-Muallaqah) in Mar Girgis, Old Cairo, showing pointed Gothic-style arches supported by marble columns, ornate Mashrabiya (خشب مشربية)-style stone screens, painted ceiling panels with geometric and floral motifs, and traditional hanging lanterns. A small marble fountain sits at the center of the tiled courtyard floor. The Hanging Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in Egypt, dating back to the 3rd–4th century AD, and is named for its location above the southern gatehouse of the Roman Fortress of Babylon.
