About this asset
The interior of the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa) in Mar Girgis, Old Cairo (Misr El-Qadima), one of Egypt's oldest and most significant Coptic Christian landmarks, dating back to the 3rd–4th century AD. The nave features rows of dark carved wooden pews, elaborately decorated arches with Coptic inlay work (Tarsia), and ornate chandeliers suspended from a richly ornamented ceiling. Visitors and worshippers can be seen exploring the church, which is built atop the southern gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon.
