About this asset
The colonnaded arcade (riwaq) of the Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun stretches in dramatic perspective, with pointed arches and massive piers casting deep shadows across the sandy courtyard floor, while the central dome (qubbah) is visible through the open arches. Built between 876–879 AD by Abbasid governor Ahmad Ibn Tulun, this mosque is one of the oldest and largest surviving Islamic monuments in Cairo and Egypt, representing early Islamic architecture with its distinctive pointed arches and open sahn (courtyard). The mosque is located in the historic Al-Sayyida Zeinab and Khalifa district and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site candidate within Historic Cairo.
