About this asset

A stone arched doorway with a distinctive keyhole (Saracenic) arch, framed within a rectangular stone recess and accessed by three semicircular limestone steps, at the base of the minaret of Ahmad ibn Tulun Mosque in the Sayeda Zeinab district of Cairo. The interplay of direct sunlight and deep shadow accentuates the carved stone texture of the Abbasid-era structure. Ahmad ibn Tulun Mosque, built in 876–879 AD, is one of the oldest and largest mosques in Cairo, featuring the only external spiral minaret in Egypt, influenced by the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq.
