About this asset
This upward-angle photograph captures the elaborately painted ceiling and papyrus-bundle columns inside the Hypostyle Hall of the Temple of Khnum in Esna, Upper Egypt. The ceiling is decorated with repeated motifs of winged vultures and cobras, astronomical symbols, and dense rows of hieroglyphic text rendered in original blue, red, ochre, and gold pigments. The Temple of Khnum, dedicated to the ram-headed creator god Khnum, was constructed primarily during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods (circa 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE) and is renowned for having one of the best-preserved painted ceilings of any ancient Egyptian temple.
