A pointed stone arch window inside Qaitbay Citadel (Qal'et Qaitbay) frames the open inner courtyard, where visitors are seated near the base of the fortress walls, a palm tree rises in the center, and Alexandria's modern residential buildings are visible on the horizon. The citadel, built in 1477 CE by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), is located on the eastern tip of Pharos Island in the Mediterranean. The rough-cut limestone of the arch wall shows the characteristic Mamluk military architecture of the 15th century.
