About this asset
A well-preserved Roman-period mummy wrapped in intricately crossed linen bandages forming a diamond geometric pattern, displayed at the Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria, Egypt. A painted portrait panel in the Fayum style — encaustic or tempera on wood — covers the face of the deceased, depicting a young dark-haired man with naturalistic features typical of the Romano-Egyptian funerary tradition (1st–3rd century CE). Fayum portraits (Bortrehat El-Fayoum) represent a unique fusion of Egyptian mummification practices with Greco-Roman artistic conventions, and are among the earliest surviving panel paintings in the world.
