About this asset
Upward view of the interior ceiling inside the Mosque of Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay, located in the Eastern Cemetery (Sahara Al-Mamalik) district along Salah Salem Road, Cairo. The ceiling features a carved and gilded octagonal wooden medallion set within a square frame, surrounded by ablaq (Ablaق) black-and-white alternating stone arches — a hallmark of Mamluk architecture. Stained glass windows (Qamariyya) in red, blue, and green filter natural light into the prayer space. The mosque was built in 1474 CE by Sultan Qaitbay, one of the most prolific builders of the Mamluk Sultanate, and is considered among the finest surviving examples of late Mamluk religious architecture in Egypt.
