About this asset
An Egyptian craftsman leans over a padded ironing surface, pressing traditional galabiya garments using a charcoal-heated foot iron (mawkat el-regl), a traditional pressing tool that predates electric irons and remains in use in Upper Egypt. Traditional galabiyas and robes hang on racks in the background of the small shop, set under a wooden-beamed ceiling typical of old Esna, Luxor. This method of cloth pressing is a surviving Upper Egyptian trade craft, practiced in small tailoring and clothing shops across towns like Esna along the Nile.
